During the International Tourism Fair, the “Spain LGTBI” project was officially presented to the Minister of Industry and Tourism of the Government of Spain, Jordi Hereu Boher. This initiative, supported by Europe’s Next Generation funds, aims to position Spain as a global leader in inclusive tourism. It is part of the country’s first LGTBI tourism strategy and is aligned with the sector’s modernization and sustainability plan.
Queer Destinations, a company recognized internationally for its work in creating safe and inclusive spaces for the LGTBI community, leads this strategy. The company has a methodology endorsed by the European Commission and collaborates with other renowned tourist destinations such as Greece and Mexico. The project is the result of collaboration with various entities in the sector, including the Basque Tourism Agency, ACOGAT, Respira Comunicación, Shangay, and Axel Hotels.
In a global context where LGTBI rights are increasingly challenged, Spain stands out as a haven where these rights are fundamental. LGTBI tourism represents a significant market, with an estimated annual spending potential of 3.7 trillion dollars, making it an essential component for the growth of the tourism sector, which aims to diversify and reduce seasonality.
The project responds to the growing demand for safe and personalized tourism experiences, meeting the specific needs of the LGTBI community and promoting destinations that celebrate diversity. This will help position Spain as an inclusive and sustainable tourist destination.
Among the highlighted initiatives is the creation of a digital platform that combines technology and training to raise awareness among tourism service providers. This tool will enable professionals in the sector to be better prepared to welcome LGTBI tourists, ensuring a respectful and appropriate reception.
With a history that includes the legalization of same-sex marriage in 2005, Spain is known for its rich culture and commitment to diversity. Despite this, the tourism sector still has a great opportunity to strengthen its inclusive offerings and attract a market whose annual global spending amounts to billions of euros.
The “Spain LGTBI” project has an investment of over 700,000 euros from the Next Generation EU funds and aims to raise awareness among tourism professionals in various regions of the country, generating a positive economic impact and promoting conscious and respectful tourism. This effort can make a significant change in how LGTBI individuals choose their tourism experiences, setting a standard that ensures their safety and well-being.
The “Spain LGTBI” project represents an important step towards a more inclusive and safe tourism, with the goal of consolidating Spain as a benchmark in offering experiences for the LGTBI community.
