Territorial policy allocates 47 million euros for digitization of the municipal registry in local entities.

The Ministry of Territorial Policy has awarded 47 million euros on Wednesday to finance the digital transformation and modernization of the municipal registry management systems of local entities, under the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR). This first resolution, approved and published in the Official State Gazette (BOE), grants 47 out of the 64 million euros called for to finance projects that implement new registry management systems allowing for real-time data exchange and updates between municipalities and the National Statistics Institute (INE).

The grants promoted by the Ministry of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory aim to leverage the funds from the PRTR and use them as a tool to adapt the municipal registry management systems to the new requirements of the Law Regulating the Bases of Local Government, introduced with the approval of royal decrees that modify the Regulation of Population and Territorial Demarcation of Local Entities.

The call aimed at provincial councils, island councils, and single-province autonomous communities, as well as municipalities, also benefits the cities of Ceuta and Melilla with grants.

This call is the fourth promoted by the Ministry of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, which, within the PRTR, manages a total of 391.4 million euros over three years for the digitalization and modernization of local entities. In 2021, a call for 92.7 million euros was published for municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants for their modernization and digitalization projects. In 2022, 154.5 million euros were allocated to digitalization projects of municipalities with fewer than 50,000 inhabitants. And, in 2023, a call for 8 million euros was allocated to the digital transformation of the administrations of the Canarian island councils and the island councils of the Balearic Islands.

As in previous calls, the allocation of grants was based on a population criterion for a total of 60 local entities that were called to submit their projects. During the application period, which began last November and ended on March 30, 2024, 58 local entities requested funding for registry digitalization projects totaling 71,641,074.97 euros.

In this first resolution, published today in the BOE, grants amounting to 47 million euros are awarded to finance 45 projects of 47 beneficiary local entities. A subsequent resolution will grant aid to the remaining requested projects until the maximum amount called for of 64 million euros is exhausted.
