Text Contrast Optimization in Chromium Browsers for Windows

In an increasingly digital world, the convenience and readability of online content have become crucial for browser users. As people spend more time reading on their screens, the contrast between text and its background becomes essential to minimize visual fatigue. In response to this situation, Microsoft has taken a significant step in improving text rendering in Chromium-based browsers.

Following a major update in 2021, Microsoft has expanded its efforts and announced that the text rendering improvement is now available for all Chromium-based browsers on Windows, including Google Chrome from version 132. This update includes advancements in gamma correction and contrast, as part of the open-source Chromium project. With these enhancements, the clarity and quality of text in these browsers resemble that of native Windows applications, promising a more comfortable reading experience for users.

Recent research has shown that increasing the contrast value to 1.0 can significantly improve text visibility, especially in lighter texts and languages such as Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK), which have received many user comments. Proactively, Microsoft has ensured that Windows users will have full control over text rendering. Through the ClearType Text Tuner, users can adjust contrast and gamma values, customizing their reading experience according to their preferences.

Previously, Microsoft Edge used DirectWrite to ensure consistent text settings throughout the system. However, with the adoption of the Chromium project, the situation has changed: it uses DirectWrite in certain phases of the process, while Skia, its own rendering system, handles the rest. This has resulted in lighter text rendering, especially in CJK characters.

To encourage continuous improvement of this new functionality, Microsoft has invited users to share their feedback on text contrast in Chromium browsers. Users can report any issues in the Chromium issue tracker or provide feedback through the Microsoft Edge feedback window.
