The Asia-Pacific Summit of the World Internet Conference Makes its Debut in Hong Kong

From April 14 to 15, Hong Kong became the epicenter of the Asia-Pacific Summit of the World Internet Conference 2025, a historic event that marked the first celebration of this summit in the city since its creation eleven years ago. Approximately a thousand participants, including government officials, academics, experts, and business representatives from over 50 countries, gathered at the Convention and Exhibition Center to discuss the central theme: “Integration of Digital Intelligence Leading the Future – Joining Efforts to Build a Community of Shared Future in Cyberspace.”

The summit was organized by the World Internet Conference, in collaboration with the Phoenix Media Group, which provided extensive and diverse coverage of the various discussion panels. One of the most relevant topics addressed was artificial intelligence (AI), with a particular focus on the DeepSeek open-source model. This model fostered a dialogue around “technological inclusivity,” becoming a recurring concept throughout the event.

Ren Xianliang, Secretary-General of the World Internet Conference, emphasized in an interview that the DeepSeek project seeks to benefit the entire global community, emphasizing the importance of inclusive development that allows more people to access technological advances. Meanwhile, Zhuang Rongwen, Director of the National Internet Information Office and President of the World Internet Conference, underscored the need for international cooperation in the AI era, warning about the risks of creating “technological islands.”

Representatives from different regions, including Africa and Latin America, shared their collaborative experiences with China in areas such as communication infrastructure and cybersecurity. A notable example was the Director of the National Telecommunications and Postal Service of Nicaragua, who highlighted how technological cooperation with China has been key to enhancing local digital capabilities.

Hong Kong startups also played a leading role, presenting innovations in brain-machine interfaces and bionic robots, reflecting the region’s potential in the context of “AI+.” During the event, the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region announced multiple initiatives, including the establishment of an artificial intelligence research institute and the promotion of smart manufacturing, with the aim of strengthening the city as an international center of technological innovation.

Finally, Wang Yong, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, urged attendees to embrace true multilateralism and work towards building a safe and orderly digital environment in his opening speech. The summit not only highlighted the advantages of Hong Kong as a technological hub in the Asia-Pacific, but also emphasized the need to deepen digital cooperation to ensure high-quality development in the future.
