The Embassy of the Philippines in Spain, under the leadership of His Excellency Ambassador Philippe J. Lhuillier, continues to strengthen cultural and economic ties between Spain and the Philippines. Throughout 2024, it has organized a series of significant events and actions, such as the National Day of the Philippines, the Business and Investment Forum of the Philippines, the Investment and Taxation Seminar in the Philippines, the Forum on Women’s Empowerment and Economic Development, and the Friendship Day between Spain and the Philippines, among others. Coming up on September 27, the “Tanglaw Awards” will be celebrated, a prominent event on the Embassy’s calendar.
The highlight event of the year was the celebration of the National Day of the Philippines on June 12, commemorating the 126th Anniversary of the Proclamation of the Independence of the Philippines and the 22nd Anniversary of the Hispanic-Filipino Friendship Day. Held at the prestigious Intercontinental Hotel in Madrid, this celebration brought together distinguished guests, representatives of Filipino and Spanish companies, government figures, and celebrities. This event underscored the rich shared history and strong economic ties between the two countries, demonstrating that the Hispanic-Filipino relationship remains significant and based on ongoing collaboration.
On September 27, the Cervantes Institute will host the Tanglaw Awards, which celebrate solidarity between the Philippines and Spain. This award, granted by the Embassy of the Philippines, honors those who have significantly contributed to fostering cooperation between the two nations. Named “tanglaw” (guiding light), these awards symbolize the path towards a prosperous future and mark the 77th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral relations, looking towards the 80th anniversary in 2027.
The Business and Investment Forum of the Philippines, held on March 21, 2024 at the Philippines Center, promoted the country as a priority destination for foreign investment. This event brought together senior officials and representatives of Spanish companies interested in investment opportunities in the Philippines, especially in its special economic zones.
The Investment and Taxation Seminar in the Philippines, held on May 9, 2024, also at the Philippines Center, provided Spanish investors with detailed information on the tax environment and investment opportunities in the country. With the participation of tax experts and members of the Chamber of Commerce of Spain, tax incentives and facilities available for foreign investors were discussed.
The Forum on Women’s Empowerment and Economic Development, held on May 11, 2024, highlighted the role of women in entrepreneurship and economic development. This event, which featured female leaders and representatives from various organizations, focused on sharing experiences and providing advice on how women can become successful entrepreneurs.
Finally, the Friendship Day between Spain and the Philippines, commemorated on June 26, 2024, was a celebration of the cultural and touristic ties between both countries. With the participation of Filipino fashion designer Hector Gellangarin and a tasting of Filipino cuisine, this event reinforced the historical and cultural connection between the Philippines and Spain.
