Among the innovations favored by this regulation are biodegradable mulching plastics, coating agents, and water retention polymers. Biodegradable mulching plastics, redesigned as soil amendments, are proving to be crucial in the agricultural sector. Their use in farming practices has been shown to be as efficient as conventional plastics, but with added benefits. These materials not only contribute to better crop yield and quality, but also assist in weed control and optimize soil temperature and moisture, maximizing agricultural productivity.
Hasso von Pogrell, managing director of European Bioplastics, has emphasized the significance of this decision, highlighting the opportunities it opens up for investments and new research. The proven biodegradability of these plastics confirms their environmental safety, while also promoting improvement in soil health and fertility.
One of the most relevant advantages of these biodegradable plastics is their ability to decompose in the place where they are used, addressing the issue of persistent microplastics at its root. Unlike conventional plastics, which pose a major challenge for recovery and recycling post-harvest, especially with very fine materials, biodegradables simplify the process by naturally integrating into the ecosystem. This is particularly important in areas affected by microplastic pollution, where the removal of non-biodegradable plastic waste can be costly and complex.
Starting from November 20, 2024, biodegradable mulching plastics will be able to display the CE mark, a designation that guarantees compliance with the strict safety and environmental protection criteria of the European Union. Coating agents and water retention polymers will follow the same path on October 17, 2028. This certification confirms that these products meet the necessary standards to ensure safe and sustainable agricultural practices.
This progress is a powerful symbol of the path towards more environmentally-friendly agriculture, confirming the EU’s commitment to a farming model that balances efficiency and ecological responsibility.
