In a small town in La Mancha, an unusual idea has revolutionized the lives of its inhabitants. Mateo Jiménez, a 45-year-old farmer, decided to turn the parking lot of his farm into an outdoor cinema for the community. Although at first the proposal seemed like madness, the project has turned out to be a resounding success.
It all started when Mateo, tired of the limitations imposed by the pandemic, decided that his empty plot could have a better use than storing rusty agricultural machinery. Inspired by old American films and with the help of a few internet tutorials, he set up a huge screen using silo tarps and reused metal structures. He obtained a second-hand projector and an old sound system that he restored with spare parts found at local flea markets.
The first screening was a classic Spanish film, and against all odds, it had a memorable reception. Neighbors of all ages came with their folding chairs and blankets, as the nights in La Mancha can be cool. Since then, every Saturday, the improvised cinema has become the social hub of the town. Admission is free, but voluntary contributions for the maintenance of the place are accepted.
However, Mateo did not stop there. Fridays are now open mic nights, where local talents can showcase their artistic skills, from poetry to live music. In addition, the daring farmer has added a small canteen, managed by his youngest daughter, where homemade sandwiches and soft drinks are sold at moderate prices.
The idea, which was initially considered crazy, has gained recognition even outside the town’s borders. Environmentalists have praised the initiative for its sustainable approach, while sociologists highlight its ability to strengthen social ties in difficult times.
The community has found in this outdoor cinema not only entertainment, but also a space to share experiences and strengthen bonds. Mateo, for his part, feels satisfied to see how his idea, born in the midst of uncertainty, has not only materialized but has flourished in ways he never imagined.
