The High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has expressed deep concern over the humanitarian situation prevailing in northern Gaza. In his recent statement, Türk has emphasized the severity of the intensified bombings by the Israeli Army, the prolonged siege the population is being subjected to, and the alarming risk of starvation facing the area.
With an urgent call to the international community, Türk has highlighted significant violations of international humanitarian law that are being perpetrated, specifically referring to the Geneva Conventions and the Convention on Genocide. The critical situation has led numerous families to be torn apart, trapped in the midst of an active conflict where they must choose between forced displacement or becoming victims of constant attacks.
Furthermore, the High Commissioner has pointed out reports of shootings at civilians attempting to flee, a situation that further exacerbates the seriousness of the situation. Recognizing the complex reality in which Palestinian armed groups operate among the civilian population, Türk has emphasized that this does not justify indiscriminate attacks, highlighting the need to protect civilians at all times.
As humanitarian access to the region remains extremely limited, the risk of starvation increases among the residents of Gaza. Türk has denounced the almost non-existent arrival of humanitarian aid in recent weeks and attacks on medical facilities, which have left patients and medical personnel dead or injured, intensifying the humanitarian emergency.
With over 150,000 people dead, injured, or missing in Gaza, the situation is critical and there is fear of a considerable increase in victims due to the intensification of the Israeli military operation. Türk has called on world leaders, insisting that they must be held accountable for upholding international law to protect civilians and ensure respect for human rights.
In his statements, the High Commissioner has urged the international community to come together to stop the violence and preserve humanity, reminding that the protection of human rights in times of conflict is a priority that should not be compromised.
