The Ministry of Transportation formalizes the works to enable pedestrian and bicycle crossings on Sagunto Avenue, Teruel.

The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has formalized the works of the urban integration project of the State Road Network in Teruel for 6.4 million euros (VAT included), with the aim of adapting the Avenida de Sagunto in the city of Teruel to the passage of pedestrians and cyclists for the sustainable improvement of mobility.

This project includes the humanization of the N-223 road (Av. de Sagunto) and actions in lighting at three junctions. The corresponding announcement will soon be published in the Official State Gazette (BOE).

Some aspects of the main actions that the construction project will contemplate are as follows:

Humanization of N-223: reduction of lane width to expand sidewalks and the construction of 1.89 km of bike lanes; reinforcement of signage at intersections between the bike lane and the lanes of the road; provision of 2+1 lanes in some sections; redistribution of bus stops, loading and parking areas; adaptation of sidewalks with trees and furniture; accessible and safe pedestrian routes; improvement of intersections and roundabouts to channel traffic; laying of sound-absorbing pavement layer; improvement of surface drainage.

Renovation of lighting on Avenida de Sagunto and at three junctions in the city’s surroundings: Teruel Center junction of the A-23, Villaspesa junction on the N-234, and the surroundings of the access to the La Paz business park, San Blas road, the National Parador, the northern bypass of Teruel N-234, and the access ramp to the A-23.

The action aligns with the State Strategy for Energy Efficiency of the State Road Network and the State Strategy for Bicycle use.

The humanization of the thoroughfare implies its subsequent transfer to the Teruel City Council, as it lacks a function of service to long-distance traffic and has an eminently local nature, with the City Council becoming the new responsible for its conservation and maintenance as the road’s owner.

The transfer of this section will not detract from the continuity of the state road network or its functionality as there are better alternatives for long-distance traffic.

The project will be financed with funds from NextGenerationEU, within the urban road improvement program of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, endowed with 105 million euros (VAT not included).
