The Museo Nacional del Prado will Enrich the Salamanca Collection with the Bust “Castellano” by Iglesias Recio.

The Museum of Salamanca has reached a significant milestone in its efforts to enrich its permanent collection with the arrival of the sculpture “Castellano”, an emblematic work by the Salamanca sculptor Domingo Iglesias Recio. This achievement has been made possible thanks to a temporary loan from the National Prado Museum, in a collaboration that seeks to strengthen cultural ties and offer greater accessibility to artistic diversity in the region.

“Castellano”, acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in 1928 and housed in the Spanish consulate in Tangier in recent years, will be integrated into the Museum of Salamanca for a period of five years, subject to renewal. This deposit is part of the “Prado Extendido” initiative, the Prado Museum’s deposit policy which aims to increase the visibility of its collection in regional museums and cultural centers throughout Spain, thus enriching curatorial discourses.

The addition of “Castellano” significantly complements the collection of the Museum of Salamanca by reflecting the history and culture of the region. At the request of the Castilla y León Regional Government, the museum also aims to rescue and value the work of deaf artists, dedicating a thematic space with works by four artists. Iglesias Recio, recognized for his skill in creating realistic busts, captures with great expressiveness the essence of his models, showcasing a talent that left a deep mark in local sculpture.

The Castilla y León Regional Government has expressed its satisfaction with this collaboration, which not only celebrates the legacy of Iglesias Recio but also highlights the richness of regional artistic talent. The arrival of “Castellano” at the Museum of Salamanca testifies to the unwavering commitment to cultural diversity and support for local artists, contributing to the promotion and valorization of the artistic heritage of Castilla y León.
