The Prado Museum opens its doors at night for the exhibition ‘El Greco. Santo Domingo el Antiguo’.

The National Prado Museum will open its doors for nighttime hours next Saturday, March 1st, allowing visitors to enjoy its galleries from 8:30pm to 11:30pm. This initiative, offering free entry and limited capacity, will allow attendees to admire the exhibition “El Greco. Santo Domingo el Antiguo”, bringing together for the first time since their dispersal eight of the nine works that the renowned Spanish painter created for the church of the Monastery of Santo Domingo el Antiguo, in Toledo.

One of the highlights of the exhibition is “The Assumption”, the large central canvas of the high altar, which has been in the custody of the Art Institute of Chicago since 1906. This work, which has not been exhibited at the Prado since 1902, can be seen alongside other pieces of the altarpiece that are preserved both in the museum and at Santo Domingo el Antiguo and different collections. The exhibition will be open to the public until June 15, thanks to the support of the Friends of the Prado Museum Foundation.

The tour of the first floor of the Villanueva building will include works by great artists such as Tintoretto, Titian, and Rubens. Visitors can admire pieces like “The Foot Washing”, “Charles V at Mühlberg”, and “The Three Graces”, respectively. Visitors can also visit the rooms dedicated to Goya, El Greco, and Velázquez. The North Ionic Gallery, located next to the Central Gallery, will exhibit 56 pieces of sculpture and decorative arts spanning from Ancient Egypt to the end of the Baroque period.

Furthermore, the nighttime opening will allow attendees to interact with experiences developed by Samsung in collaboration with the museum, such as “The Prado Guide”, and enjoy the museum shop and Café Prado in the Jerónimos hall.

Practical details for this nighttime experience indicate that entry will be free and open until full capacity is reached, with the last entry allowed at 11:00pm. Entry will be through the Jerónimos Gate. This special opening is the result of collaboration between the Prado Museum, Samsung, and Radio 3, which also organizes sessions on creativity and culture at the same museum.
