The Prado National Museum reorganizes its Conservation and Research Unit into Eleven Collection Departments.

The Prado Museum has carried out a significant reorganization in its internal structure, establishing eleven collection departments that will be led by experts in their respective areas. This new configuration will be implemented under the supervision of Alfonso Palacio Álvarez, who will assume the position of Deputy Director of Conservation and Research starting on February 1. The aim of this change is to improve the management of the museum’s extensive collection, which houses over 40,000 pieces of painting, sculpture, decorative arts, drawings, and prints.

The collection departments will be led by specialists in various disciplines, each tasked with overseeing and studying the rich variety of works held by the museum. Among the notable appointments are Joan Molina Figueras, who will lead the collection of European painting up to 1500, and Alejandro Vergara Sharp, in charge of Flemish painting and Northern schools. Leticia Ruiz Gómez will take charge of the collection of Spanish Renaissance painting, and Javier Portús Pérez will be responsible for the collection of Spanish Baroque painting.

Andrés Úbeda de los Cobos, who has served as Deputy Director for the past six years, will be the new head of the collection of 18th century Spanish painting and Goya, a significant appointment considering that 2028 will mark the bicentennial of the renowned painter’s death. José Manuel Matilla Rodríguez has also been appointed as head of the collection of drawings and prints, while Leticia Azcue Brea will lead sculpture from 1700 and decorative arts.

In the same session where these changes were announced, the museum’s Permanent Commission appointed Reyes Carrasco Garrido as the new General Coordinator for Conservation and Collection Management, succeeding Víctor Cageao Santacruz, who has been appointed Director of the Royal Collections Gallery. Additionally, the organizational chart was modified to integrate the Institutional Relations Area under the new Communication and Corporate Affairs Department, reflecting a continued commitment to the improvement and modernization of the institution.
