The Secretary-General condemns the attack against Colombian politician Miguel Uribe.

The UN Secretary-General has strongly condemned the attack on Colombian politician and presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay, who was targeted on June 7 in Bogotá. During a campaign event in the Modelia neighborhood, Uribe Turbay, 39, a senator from the Democratic Center party, was hit by two bullets while addressing his supporters.

The politician has undergone two surgeries at the Santa Fe Foundation and is in critical condition, showing a limited response to medical treatments. Amid this alarming situation, authorities have detained a presumed assailant, only 15 years old, who was found in possession of a gun.

In his statement, the Secretary-General expressed his wish for Uribe Turbay’s swift recovery and extended his solidarity to his family and the Colombian people. He also emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the violent act, demanding that those responsible be brought to justice.

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Colombia has called on authorities to investigate and punish the perpetrators, highlighting the importance of ensuring a political environment free from violence. The country’s Attorney General, Luz Adriana Camargo, has indicated that the investigation is focused on an organized criminal group, emphasizing that the detained youth is merely the material executor of the attack.

Colombia is at a crucial moment, with the electoral process for legislative and presidential elections scheduled for March and May 2026. Guterres has stated that these elections represent an opportunity for the population to strengthen its democracy through a peaceful electoral process.
