The Spanish cooking sector closed 2022 with a 17% growth compared to 2021.

The past year 2022 was a good year for the Spanish kitchen sector, according to data provided by the Kitchen Furniture Association. According to this data, there was a 17% increase compared to 2021. Looking at their turnover, it increased by 10.36% compared to 2021.

“Since the summer of 2022, a return to normality can be seen. The pandemic boom is not in the market,” says Manuel Tirado from ZONA. Breaking down the results by the sectors that make up AMC, the largest growth was registered by both distribution companies (15.05%) and appliance manufacturers (12.26%) and component manufacturers (9.86%). While countertop manufacturers grew by 6.67%, hardware manufacturers by 5.85%, and table and chair manufacturers by 3.11%. Software companies, on the other hand, maintained their growth pace.

Despite these good sales figures, profitability is slightly lower due to the rising costs of production associated with energy, some raw materials, or transportation. Nevertheless, in the words of Antonio Morilla from 2aküchen, “the kitchen sector remains strong and integrates any new innovation, which makes it less sensitive to downward pressures of demand. Workforces are now smaller, although with higher turnover, which means we are becoming more productive and efficient.”

Furthermore, it is important to highlight that the average value of a kitchen has increased by around 15% compared to 2021. This is partly due to the new role of the kitchen in the house and better and more complete equipment: “now it is a space that is not only used for cooking but is increasingly equipped, incorporates more gadgets and functionalities that help in everyday life, and has a higher level of quality,” say representatives from Delamora.

Foreign Trade

If the balance within our borders is positive, the ones from abroad are equally favorable since exports have grown by 55% since 2019 and imports by 8%. These data consolidate the increase in consumption of ‘La Buena Cocina Hecha en Casa’. “The kitchen furniture sector continues with strength despite all the difficulties of rising production costs and an initial uncertain situation created in the Iberian and EU markets due to the global geopolitical situation,” says Moisés Castillo from Pando.

Thus, ESTACOM data compiled by AMC indicates a growth of exports by 25% year-on-year to €205.457 billion. This figure once again sets a record in the past five years. Imports, on the other hand, also grew by 13.13% year-on-year to €79.314 billion. “The sector has had a very positive evolution following the pandemic, and many companies have taken advantage of the tailwind to invest and renew their equipment, management models, and facilities, gaining competitiveness both in Spain and abroad,” points out Francisco Fernández from Key Solutions.

Regarding the main destinations for Spanish kitchen furniture, France, Portugal, and the United States are once again on the podium in that order, accounting for almost 77% of Spanish exports. “There are opportunities in certain foreign markets due to fluctuations in the dollar against the euro, as well as in freight rates. Importers are looking for greater stability and find it in closer suppliers. The habitat is still very important, although it is also true that the rise in interest rates should affect consumption during 2023,” says Cristina Montañés from Menage-Confort.

Thus, France with €115.388 billion registered a growth of 13.50%, Portugal with €24.582 billion experienced a growth of 41.90%, and the United States with €17.797 billion, a growth of 33.80%. It is worth noting the fourth position of the United Kingdom, which with €9.442 billion, achieved a spectacular growth of 99.20%.
