In an effort to provide a comprehensive view of economic performance, the Total Market Production Index (TMPI) has become a fundamental tool. This index encompasses industry, construction, trade, and services, combining all areas currently covered by short-term statistics indicators under the European Regulation on Business Statistics.
Under the statistical classification of economic activities NACE Rev. 2, the TMPI includes:
– Industry: Sections B (mining and quarrying), C (manufacturing), and D (electricity, gas, steam).
– Construction: Section F.
– Trade: Section G, which includes motor vehicle trade and repair (G45), wholesale trade (G46), and retail trade (G47).
– Services: Divisions H (transportation), I (accommodation and food services), J (information and communication), L (real estate activities), M (professional, scientific, and technical services), and N (business support services).
A comparison between the evolution of the TMPI and quarterly Gross Domestic Product (GDP) reveals significant similarities, although over time, differences tend to become more noticeable. However, these discrepancies can be attributed to the limited coverage of the TMPI and various additional methodological reasons that are also explained in related statistical articles.
