The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has taken a significant step towards modernizing the country’s infrastructure by announcing a tender for a contract worth 4.96 million euros, including VAT. This contract aims to provide technical support to the General Directorate of Roads (DGC) to implement the Building Information Modeling (BIM) methodology in its projects and works. This advancement represents an effort to optimize the planning and construction of infrastructure, promoting a more efficient and sustainable management of Spanish roads.
The BIM methodology, a collaborative platform, allows for the comprehensive management of construction projects through the use of digital models that function as databases. These models enable a thorough tracking of all elements of an infrastructure throughout its entire lifecycle. The use of BIM enhances sustainability in construction and optimizes public spending, ensuring that resources are used more efficiently.
This ambitious effort is financed by the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan (PRTR), which allocates 35 million euros, excluding VAT, from the NextGenerationEU funds for the digitalization of various areas. These areas include the improvement of information management systems for the State Road Network, leading towards a more modern and technologically advanced infrastructure.
The tender for this contract is part of a broader government strategy to gradually introduce the BIM methodology in public procurement. This approach aligns with the BIM Plan, approved by the Council of Ministers on June 27, 2023, and developed by the BIM Interministerial Commission. With these measures, the Spanish government aims not only to modernize its infrastructure but also to prepare for future challenges in terms of sustainability and efficiency, positioning itself as a benchmark in the implementation of advanced technologies in infrastructure management.
