Transportation Department Bids for Projects to Reduce Noise on A-1 and A-5 Highways in the Metropolitan Area of Madrid.

The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has announced the tender of two important contracts totaling almost 28 million euros, with the aim of combating noise pollution in the community of Madrid. The works will focus on the A-1 and A-5 motorways, affecting five municipalities in the metropolitan area and thus improving the quality of life of its residents.

The interventions will include the installation of a total of 21 noise barriers along approximately 30 kilometers of both motorways. The first contract, which refers to a section of about five kilometers of the A-1, will impact the areas of La Moraleja and Alcobendas. This project has a budget of 12.54 million euros and plans for the installation of 11 sound barriers. These barriers will have heights ranging from 2 to 6 meters, covering a total length of 3,928 meters.

The sound barriers to be installed are designed with state-of-the-art materials capable of providing superior sound insulation of more than 24 decibels and noise absorption greater than 11 decibels. Specifically, each panel will be made of galvanized steel sheet and a core of rock wool, ensuring its effectiveness in noise reduction.

On the other hand, the contract corresponding to the A-5 has been tendered for 15.45 million euros and will be allocated to the installation of 10 noise barriers in a section of almost 25 kilometers. This route will cover the municipalities of Navalcarnero, Alcorcón, and Móstoles, where metal and acrylic barriers will be installed, reaching heights of between 4 and 5 meters and a total length of 3,489 meters.

These initiatives are part of the II phase of the Noise Action Plan, developed to comply with the European Union Directive 2002/49/EC, which establishes a common framework for the assessment and management of environmental noise. This Plan is also integrated into the sustainability and energy efficiency policies of the Spanish state, reflecting the Government’s commitment to improving living conditions in areas affected by noise pollution.
