The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has taken a firm step towards the modernization of road infrastructure in Spain by initiating the bidding process for the improvement works of the Miravete tunnel, located on the A-5 motorway. This tunnel is situated between the municipalities of Casas de Miravete and Deleitosa, in the province of Cáceres, and is key for traffic between the cities of Madrid and Badajoz.
The planned investment for this ambitious project amounts to 3,051,920.19 euros, a figure that includes value-added tax (VAT) and reflects the government’s commitment to modernizing its infrastructure. It is expected that the official announcement of this contract will be published soon in the Official State Gazette (BOE), triggering the improvements deemed necessary by the General Directorate of Roads.
This project is part of the Energy Efficiency Plan of the General Directorate of Roads, and is part of the commitments made by Spain to the European Commission through the Recovery Plan Addendum. Financed by the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), the main objective is to optimize energy efficiency in transport infrastructure, thus reducing its environmental impact.
The Miravete tunnel, located between kilometers 217 and 218 of the A-5, consists of two one-way tubes. The first, heading towards Badajoz, has a length of 1,178 meters, while the second, directing traffic towards Madrid, measures 1,195 meters. The planned works will focus on implementing the necessary equipment and facilities to ensure both the safety of tunnel users and a notable reduction in energy consumption.
This project represents not only a significant advancement in the modernization of the region’s road infrastructure, but also a significant boost for sustainable mobility within the framework of the strategies outlined by the Recovery Plan. Additionally, it is backed by European initiatives such as NextGenerationEU, highlighting the cooperation between nations to achieve a greener and more efficient future.
