Vertiv Launches Its Innovative Evaporative Freecooling Solution with Low GWP Refrigerant to Improve Efficiency and Decrease Carbon Footprint in Data Centers in EMEA.

Vertiv, a recognized global provider of critical digital infrastructure and continuity solutions, has introduced its new series of cooling units, called Vertiv™ Liebert® EFC. This launch represents a significant advancement in the company’s technological offerings, as these evaporative free cooling units use refrigerants with low Global Warming Potential (GWP). The initiative aligns with the growing environmental demands of data centers, especially those focused on cloud services and colocation.

The new solution is available in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region, with capacities ranging from 150 to 450 kW. The Vertiv Liebert EFC unit stands out for its innovative combination of indirect air-to-air heat exchange cooling and evaporative cooling, all in one system. This configuration allows for annual efficiency improvements of up to 19% compared to previous technologies, achieving an exceptional pPUE (partial Power Usage Effectiveness) of just 1.05.

One of the most relevant features of the Liebert EFC is its operational flexibility, where users can switch between different operating modes through software controls. This ability to optimize the use of resources such as energy and water allows data center operators to reduce their environmental impact, while ensuring a continuous supply of cooling, regardless of resource availability. Additionally, models are offered that include backup direct expansion (DX) units that operate with a remote condenser, ensuring cooling without relying on a water supply and thus increasing system reliability.

Sam Bainborough, Vice President of the Cooling Business Unit in EMEA at Vertiv, has emphasized the growing concern for sustainability among companies, which are seeking cooling solutions that not only reduce resource consumption, but also offer flexibility and resilience. The Liebert EFC technology is designed to meet these demands, optimizing the use of free cooling and taking advantage of the benefits of natural evaporation.

Furthermore, the new Liebert EFC unit has been designed to comply with current global regulations and specific requirements of the European Union. Its construction includes polymers that increase its resistance to corrosion and give it superior ability to deal with various water qualities. At the heart of this technology is Vertiv™ Liebert® iCOM™, which ensures automatic transitions between the most efficient operating modes, ensuring the integrated operation of cooling systems, improving continuity and reliability without the need for additional management systems.
