Home Preparation: Almost Half of Spaniards Feel Prepared, But 1 in 3 Would React Too Late

Home security has emerged as an increasingly relevant concern for Spanish families. According to a recent study by the company ADT, nearly half of the population (47.6%) feels confident in their family’s preparedness to face emergencies. However, a deeper analysis of the data reveals an alarming disconnect between perception and the reality experienced by many households.

9% of respondents admit to feeling very unprepared to respond adequately to critical situations, such as fires or household accidents. Even more concerning is that 36.3% indicate that it would take them between 3 and 5 minutes or more to react to an imminent danger. In contrast, only 20.4% claim that they could act in less than a minute, highlighting a lack of preparedness that could prove fatal in crucial moments.

The vulnerability of children in these situations is also a cause for concern. A complementary study indicates that one in three parents believe their children do not know how to respond if a stranger knocks on the door. Although 77% of children claim to know how to contact their parents in case of an emergency, the lack of structured preparation could jeopardize their safety.

In order to strengthen emergency preparedness, experts at ADT have shared five practical tips. These include creating clear home security routines that encompass specific procedures for fires, break-ins, or accidents. Involving children in these family conversations is key; it allows them to express their concerns and gain a greater understanding of risk situations.

Additionally, it is essential for both children and adults to collaborate in developing an emergency action plan, assigning specific roles to each family member. Technology is presented as a fundamental ally in this area, as the implementation of alarm systems and surveillance cameras can make a home a safer and more connected environment.

José González Osma, CEO of ADT, emphasizes the relevance of these measures, stating that “the right combination of prevention, preparation, and innovative solutions allows for the creation of a safe and peaceful environment for all family members.” This message underscores the need for families to take home security seriously, turning confidence into concrete action to protect what is most valuable: their loved ones.
