September not only means back to school, but for many it marks the beginning of a new annual cycle. This month is associated with goal-setting, and among them reading stands out. Nocturna de Libros, a bookstore located in Alcorcón, has decided to take advantage of this opportunity to promote the habit of reading among young people through children’s book clubs.
Reading is an activity that improves brain connections, enhances language skills, and increases the ability to comprehend and relate concepts. After the pandemic, many rediscovered this habit, dusting off books from their shelves and getting back into reading. According to the Ministry of Culture, reading rates in Spain have increased, reaching 68% of the reading population.
In households with children under 6 years old, over 76% of parents read to their children, thus fostering an interest in books from an early age. The Barometer of Reading and Book Buying Habits in Spain 2023 reflects that 86% of children aged 6 to 9 read in their free time, a figure that remains almost stable in the age group of 10 to 14 years.
Children’s and youth book clubs are emerging as an alternative to take reading out of homes and turn it into a collective activity. These clubs promote socialization, a sense of community, participation, and foster critical thinking, essential aspects in the development of young people.
Nocturna de Libros has seen an opportunity in this to enrich the lives of children and young people in the municipality. Therefore, at the beginning of the school year, they are launching two book clubs: one for children and one for teenagers. On October 4, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., a book club for children aged 9 to 12 will be held, reading “Little Nicholas” by René Goscinny, a classic of children’s literature that teaches values such as friendship and school coexistence. On October 11, at the same time, a session will be held for children aged 6 to 8 with “Frog and Toad Are Friends” by Arnold Lobel.
Reading is fundamental in the development of young people. Various studies indicate that children who read with their parents from an early age have a considerable academic advantage. Starting the school year with the intention of reading more and participating in spaces where reading is fun is an invaluable gift for future generations. The booksellers at Nocturna de Libros are committed to making reading an enriching and accessible experience for all children in Alcorcón.
