The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has announced the award of a contract valued at 550,034 euros, including VAT, for the installation of wildlife deterrent beacons along several sections of the N-502 road, which runs through the province of Toledo. This project, aimed at reducing accidents caused by animals crossing the road, will cover a distance of 93.9 kilometers between the towns of Parrillas and Sevilleja de la Jara.
The initiative seeks to improve road safety for drivers and protect local wildlife. To achieve these goals, deterrent beacons equipped with advanced technology will be installed: ultrasonic devices and flashing LED lights. These tools emit audible and visual signals to alert both drivers and animals of the potential danger of crossing. An innovative aspect of these beacons is their solar-powered operation, allowing them to activate only when traffic is present on the road or if an animal is detected within a range of 13 to 17 meters. They will be placed every 20 meters along the route to ensure full coverage.
In addition to the deterrent beacons, control beacons will be implemented that are specifically activated by the presence of vehicles. These will be located at a distance of between 150 and 200 meters from the deterrent beacons, ensuring that any incoming vehicle simultaneously triggers alerts for drivers and wildlife.
The project also includes the installation of fences along one side of the selected sections, providing an additional measure of protection along the road.
This initiative is part of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, funded with a budget of up to 659 million euros from the NextGenerationEU funds. Beyond the modernization of road infrastructure, the plan includes the protection of vulnerable users and wildlife, the promotion of sustainability and energy efficiency, and the reduction of noise pollution on the State Road Network.
