AleaSoft Energy Forecasting has taken a significant step in the Spanish energy sector by betting on the integration of batteries into renewable energies. Antonio Delgado Rigal, the founder and CEO of the company, shared his vision on the opportunities and challenges of this emerging trend in an interview with Milena Giorgi from Energía Estratégica España.
Data provided by Red Eléctrica reveal that permits have been requested for 17 gigawatts (GW) of battery installations, of which more than 9 GW already have green light, while more than 7 GW are awaiting approval. In this scenario, at least 1 GW corresponds to hybrid projects, emphasizing the relevance of combining renewable energies with storage systems.
Delgado Rigal argues that incorporating batteries not only optimizes energy generation, reducing spills and avoiding price cannibalization, but also allows developers to improve conditions in power purchase agreements (PPAs). With this, they can negotiate more competitive and favorable contracts, strengthening the economic viability of their projects.
AleaSoft’s CEO highlights that the drop in battery costs, which halved last year, has been crucial to make both independent and hybrid projects profitable. In addition, those systems that already have grid access enjoy greater profitability due to the decrease in CAPEX (capital expenditure).
Although the energy storage sector in Spain is in its early stages, the increase in requests for grid access demonstrates a growing interest among developers. However, the sector’s progress is awaiting the launch of the capacity market, planned for the first quarter of 2025, which would improve the viability and return on investment of these installations.
Delgado Rigal emphasizes the need for clear and stable regulations to guide energy storage and its market. He also points out the importance of mitigating the risk perception associated with financing these technological innovations to ensure their competitiveness.
AleaSoft Energy Forecasting decisively bets on energy storage as an essential component for the sustainability and efficiency of the energy system. According to the CEO, while the focus of the last five years has been on photovoltaic energy, future development will significantly depend on the deployment of batteries and their hybridization with renewable sources. In this context, the company is committed to offering forecasting and analysis tools to maximize the value of investments in these pioneering energy storage projects.
