Committed Schools: Keys to Pharmaceutical Care and Leadership in Administrative Support

This morning, within the framework of the I Ibero-American Conference organized by the Spanish Society of Clinical, Family and Community Pharmacy (SOCFIC) and the Official College of Pharmacists of Gipuzkoa (COFG), the importance of pharmaceutical care in the management of minor symptoms was highlighted. The event, held in San Sebastian, was attended by more than 200 pharmacy professionals.

During the conference, Jesus C. Gomez, president of SOCFIC, emphasized that pharmaceutical care for minor symptoms constitutes around 30% of the daily activity in a pharmacy. He called for strengthening this area through the development of standardized protocols and scientific evidence. Gomez emphasized that although changes are not achieved overnight, solid foundations are being built to move towards a more clinical and healthcare-oriented pharmacy.

Miguel Ángel Gastelurrutia, president of the COFG, pointed out that Pharmaceutical Care services not only improve the quality of life of patients, but also prove to be cost-effective. These interventions improve health outcomes and ultimately benefit the public health system’s economy.

The event also served to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the College of Pharmacists of Gipuzkoa. Gastelurrutia highlighted that since 1999, the college has effectively promoted these services, positioning San Sebastian and Gipuzkoa on the map of the Ibero-American pharmaceutical field.

The conference was inaugurated by Miren Nekane Arzallus, acting mayor of Donostia, and is scheduled to conclude with the participation of Jon Iñaki Betolaza, Director of Pharmacy of the Basque Government.

Another key presentation was given by Larraitz Alzate, COFG’s training coordinator, who presented priority strategies for implementing pharmaceutical services. Alzate emphasized the importance of professional associations aligning with the healthcare vision and the need for pharmacy leaders to facilitate this process. She also advocated for governmental support to ensure quality service.

Throughout the session, various experiences and clinical cases of pharmaceutical care for minor symptoms, such as burns, cough, diarrhea, insomnia, and stress, were presented. These examples provided an overview of the current state of this type of care throughout Ibero-America, reaffirming its relevance in daily health care.
