In 2023, the European Union (EU) produced 3.2 billion liters of ice cream, representing a 1.4% decrease compared to 2022, when a total of 3.3 billion liters were produced. Germany stood out as the top ice cream producer, with a production of 612 million liters. France and Italy followed closely, with 568 million liters and 527 million liters, respectively.
In addition to leading in production, Germany produced ice cream with the lowest average price in 2023, at €1.8 per liter. France reported an average price of €2.2 per liter, while in Italy the cost was €2.6 per liter. On the other hand, Austria positioned itself as the country with the most expensive ice cream, with an average price of €7.7 per liter, followed by Hungary (€4.8 per liter) and Greece (€3.7 per liter).
Along with Germany, Lithuania offered some of the most affordable ice creams, with an average price of €1.9 per liter, followed by Czechia (€2.0 per liter) and Sweden (€2.1 per liter).
Regarding exports, in 2023, EU countries exported 261 million kg of ice cream to countries outside the bloc, with a total value of €1.04 billion. At the same time, ice cream imports from outside the EU totaled 56 million kg, valued at €217 million. Exports saw a 5% increase compared to 2022, when 249 million kg were exported, while imports from outside the EU decreased by 8% compared to the previous year, when 61 million kg had been imported.
France stood out as the top ice cream exporter from the EU in 2023, shipping 52 million kg to non-EU countries and representing 20% of EU ice cream exports. The Netherlands, Germany, Italy, and Ireland were also significant exporters, with 35 million kg, 29 million kg, 28 million kg, and 24 million kg, respectively.
