The 27-year-old Lydia Sempere from Alicante has broken barriers in the world of motorsport by becoming the first professional female driver in Spain with profound bilateral deafness. Her story of personal and professional triumph has captured the attention of thousands, and now, Sempere has joined the Adecco Foundation as an ambassador for their social cause focused on #EmploymentForAll individuals.
Lydia’s journey, hailing from Banyeres, is inspiring. Despite experiencing bullying during her school years, she did not back down and relentlessly pursued her dream in an industry traditionally dominated by men. Through tireless effort, she secured the necessary funding to start her career and developed a helmet adapted to her cochlear implants. Her most recent career highlight includes her participation in the Renault Clio Cup, where she competed against international drivers and achieved a remarkable seventh place, being the only woman registered in the competition.
In her new role with the Adecco Foundation, Lydia will take part in the #EncountersForDiversity, sharing her experiences with companies and social institutions. Her goal is to break down barriers and stereotypes related to disability, promoting the creation of more diverse and inclusive work environments. Through talks and workshops, Lydia aims to inspire significant changes in hiring policies and organizational culture within companies.
According to Francisco Mesonero, general director of the Adecco Foundation, “Lydia is a living example of overcoming obstacles, resilience, and talent. Her journey as a professional driver in a context full of challenges once again demonstrates to us that disability is not a limitation in itself, but can be a catalyst for change that brings out the best in each person.” Mesonero expressed confidence that Lydia’s passion and bravery will have a transformative impact in the business and social spheres, leading the labor market towards greater inclusivity and diversity.
Additionally, Lydia leads the ‘Driving without Barriers’ initiative, which aims to include young people with disabilities in sports, inspiring them through karting events. With this initiative, she aims to motivate young people and help them integrate socially, educationally, and professionally.
Lydia reflects on her journey: “I know the feeling of the world not being adapted for you, but I also know that when society believes in your potential and offers opportunities, extraordinary successes can be achieved.” Her example aims to motivate companies to open their minds and doors to individuals with disabilities, overcoming stigma and achieving genuine inclusion.
Sempere’s addition to the Adecco Foundation’s team of ambassadors, alongside figures like Pablo Pineda and Desirée Vila, strengthens the voice of those who advocate for a more inclusive society. Using their life experiences as tools for change and awareness, Lydia emerges as a leading figure in the fight for equality and integration.
