Modernization of irrigation systems in the Canals d’Urgell receives a boost with an investment of over 28 million euros.

The Secretary of State for Agriculture and Food, Begoña García, visited today the modernization works of 55,138 hectares of irrigation in the General Community of Irrigators of the Canals of Urgell, in Mollerussa (Lleida). The ministry is allocating 28,260,660 euros to evaluate the progress of the works.

This ambitious modernization has a 24-month execution period and will benefit 17,186 irrigators in the regions of Noguera, Plà d’Urgell, and Les Garrigues, in the province of Lleida. Currently, some of the channels and irrigation ditches used in this area are highly deteriorated, causing significant water losses and limiting transport capacity. The main objective of the project is to prevent leakage in the main channels and regulate the flow according to irrigation needs.

As part of the irrigation modernization plan in the Canals of Urgell, the construction of three reservoirs capable of storing up to 1.1 cubic hectometers of water is included, which will improve the management of the canal and the entire irrigable area. Associated with these reservoirs, dynamic regulation gates will be installed to facilitate the automation of their filling and flow regulation.

This project is being developed within the framework of the program for efficiency and sustainability in irrigation, included in the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan (PRTR), and financed with Next Generation funds from the European Union.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food plans to invest a total of 140.8 million euros in Catalonia in eight irrigation modernization projects, under the PRTR, representing 10.6% of the total funds allocated for this purpose. Of these eight projects, seven already have approved projects, with two of them under execution, one awarded and pending commencement, and four in the bidding process.
