The Prado Museum, in collaboration with Telefónica, has launched an innovative initiative called “The art that connects”. This project aims to bring masterpieces of painting to various Spanish locations, promoting connection between people and culture. The initiative has started its journey in the city of Albacete with the exhibition of “Saint Peter” by José de Ribera, a prominent work that will remain at the Albacete Museum until November 3, 2024.
The painting “Saint Peter” offers a unique representation of the apostle, who is traditionally identified by carrying the keys. Ribera, in this work, introduces the element of the book, adding a less common feature to the saint’s usual iconography. Furthermore, the uniqueness of the work lies in the artist’s use of facial features, which suggest holiness and set this piece apart from Ribera’s other works.
This cultural proposal is part of the celebrations of Telefónica’s centenary and aims to unite people through art and culture. In addition, as part of this initiative, “The art that connects” will bring works by illustrious masters such as Velázquez, Goya, Rubens, and Murillo to 18 more locations, serving as a boost for cultural activities and attracting art lovers from across the country.
This effort adds to those already made by the Prado Museum, such as its “Touring Spain” project launched in 2019 during its Bicentennial, positively impacting numerous cities in the country. Through these initiatives, around forty locations have had the opportunity to host valuable works from Spain’s most significant museum. Additionally, the Prado complements these efforts with loans, temporary traveling exhibitions, and the program “The Prado in the streets”, which brings high-quality artistic reproductions to public spaces and has visited multiple Spanish regions.
The arrival of Ribera’s work in Albacete symbolizes not only access to art for more diverse audiences but also highlights the active role of the Prado Museum and Telefónica as cultural facilitators throughout Spain.
