The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has taken a significant step towards modernizing transportation infrastructure in Spain. They have launched a tender, valued at nearly 5 million euros, to contract technical assistance services aimed at supporting the Directorate General of Roads in the implementation of the BIM (Building Information Modeling) methodology. This move aligns with the objectives of the Safe, Sustainable, and Connected Mobility Strategy 2030, marking a new chapter in the digitalization and sustainability of the country’s infrastructure.
The tender, which will be open to proposals until November 15, is part of the BIM Plan approved by the Council of Ministers in June 2023. This plan responds to the need to make public spending more efficient and at the same time promote digitalization in the construction sector, essential for developing modern and sustainable roads.
Although the implementation of BIM is not new for the Ministry, as they awarded a 1.01 million euro contract for a pilot project on the A-67 highway in Cantabria in 2023, this new tender aims to strengthen and expand its use. The pilot project allowed for the establishment of the necessary foundations for the application of BIM in the project and execution phases within the Directorate General of Roads.
The new contract not only aims to consolidate the use of BIM but also to provide comprehensive support. It includes defining implementation strategies, developing specific requirements for contracting, and creating guides and manuals. Additionally, specialized training will be offered to staff and ongoing assistance to ensure efficient and sustainable use of the technology.
The advantages of adopting the BIM methodology are numerous, including greater efficiency and quality in constructions at a reduced cost. This has sparked interest among professionals in the sector, many of whom have chosen to expand their training through specialized BIM programs.
This technological push is part of the State Highway Network Digitization Plan, financed by the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, with support from the NextGenerationEU funds. A total allocation of up to 35 million euros is planned for digitalization in the field of mobility in Spain, reinforcing the country’s commitment to a more sustainable and connected future.
