The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has made a significant move towards the modernization of Spain’s transport infrastructure by announcing the tender for a technical assistance service contract valued at nearly 5 million euros. This contract aims to support the Directorate General of Highways in implementing the BIM (Building Information Modeling) methodology, a key part of the broader goal to digitalize and make the country’s road network more sustainable, in line with the Safe, Sustainable, and Connected Mobility Strategy 2030.
This tender, which will accept bids until November 15, is part of the BIM Plan, approved by the Council of Ministers in June 2023. The plan aims to increase the efficiency of public spending and make significant advancements in the digitalization of the construction sector, a crucial pillar for developing more modern and sustainable infrastructure.
The Ministry has already explored the use of BIM in 2023, through the award of a service contract for 1.01 million euros for a pilot project on the expansion of the A-67 highway in Cantabria. This pilot project set a precedent for the application of BIM in project and construction phases, marking a significant change in the approach of the Directorate General of Highways.
The new technical assistance contract will focus on consolidating the use of BIM and providing comprehensive support. This will include defining specific strategies for its implementation, developing requirements for tender documents, and creating guides and manuals. Additionally, the staff of the Directorate General of Highways will benefit from specialized training and continuous assistance, to ensure effective and sustainable management of the technology.
The adoption of BIM promises numerous advantages, such as greater efficiency and quality in constructions at a reduced cost, which generates significant interest among professionals in the sector. Many are opting to expand their training through specialized programs and seek to enroll in the best BIM master’s available online.
The drive towards BIM technology is part of the Digitalization Plan for the State Road Network and is financially supported by the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, which leverages NextGenerationEU funds. These funds allocate a total of up to 35 million euros to promote digitalization in mobility in Spain. This effort represents not only an advancement in technology but also a commitment to sustainability and continuous improvement of the country’s infrastructure.
