On April 4th, the Spanish Association of Information Companies (ASEDIE) presented its 13th Report on the “Data Economy in the Information Industry” at the National Geographic Institute. Emilio López, director of the National Center for Geographic Information, highlighted the importance of collaboration and the development of the IGN over its 155 years of history. Ignacio Jiménez, president of ASEDIE, opened the presentation of the report, which was carried out by members of the organization’s information sources commission.
The report revealed significant economic data: the number of information companies, which reuses public and private information to generate value-added products, had reached 757 by the end of 2023. This represents a 70% increase compared to 2013, when ASEDIE released its first report on this sector. The report also indicated a notable increase in employability within this field, reaching a total of 24,620 professionals in Spain.
The information industry has become a crucial engine of the national economy, reporting a total profit of 133 million euros in 2023. In an environment where data is increasingly valuable and relevant, these results reflect the growing importance of this sector in the Spanish economy.
The event also discussed the advances of the TOP 10 ASEDIE, an initiative aimed at facilitating access and openness of public information. The meeting also addressed one of the most prominent challenges for reusing public sector data: administrative silence. During the event, the essential role of ASEDIE in the development of the information industry in Spain was highlighted.
Carmen Cabanillas, General Director of Public Governance, concluded the event by announcing that Spain will host the IX Global Summit of the Open Government Alliance in Vitoria. In her speech, Cabanillas emphasized the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors, and advocated for proactive information disclosure, rather than just doing it on demand. ASEDIE reiterated its commitment to continue promoting this collaboration and transparency, in an effort to foster the Data Economy in the country.
