The Mediterranean Diet and Outdoor Exercise: The Ideal Duo for a Fit Summer

With the arrival of summer and vacation, maintaining a healthy diet and a routine of physical activity become crucial to enjoy this season to the fullest. Dr. Juan Antonio Arévalo, a specialist in Digestive System at Quirónsalud Bizkaia Hospital, explains that sedentary lifestyle is one of the key factors that affect our health both in the present and in the future.

“We should not supplement ourselves with omega-3, but rather consume foods rich in omega-3 such as blue fish, salmon, avocado, and walnuts,” comments Dr. Arévalo. The specialist emphasizes the importance of adhering to a Mediterranean diet, which mainly consists of fruits, vegetables, and legumes. According to the doctor, “this diet consists mainly of fruits, vegetables, and legumes. In addition, the diet should be mainly based on products rich in omega-3.”

Excessive eating is another concern. “Excesses are probably one of the things that most affect the digestive system. One should not abuse refined sugars, saturated fats, fried foods, or breaded foods,” details Arévalo. He points out that a combination of a balanced diet and regular exercise not only improves physical condition, but also reduces the risk of chronic diseases, improves mood, and promotes restful sleep.

Dr. Arévalo also emphasizes the need to balance social life and health: “You can enjoy friends, food, and physical activity that fulfills us, not necessarily high intensity. But physical activity is a fundamental part of digestive health.” He recommends making time for outdoor physical activities and taking into account the quality of food: “Eating smart means consuming foods that are not overly processed like grilled fish or meat, a little seafood. Let’s not abuse excessively elaborated and greasy meals. And, of course, use alcohol very moderately because it is a great inducer of digestive problems and discomfort.”

Dr. Arévalo concludes by reminding of the importance of an active life and a healthy diet for overall well-being, especially during the summer.
